The HCS Music Program seeks to develop student musicians who grow in personal discipline and skill, perform quality music with the ensemble, develop meaningful relationships, and use their musical abilities to bring glory to our Father in Heaven.

Every school year, there is a fall concert and a spring concert. Our choirs may also sing at field trips, fundraisers, graduation ceremony, and other events.
Concert Choir is a non-auditioned choir for boys and girls, where vocal and choral techniques will be taught, along with music theory and score reading, while we prepare 3 and 4-part music in a variety of styles. Open to grades 6-12.

Joel Wood is Senior Pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church of La Mesa, husband to Emily, the director of HCS musicals, and father to Esther (2022 HCS Alum), Jonathan (2026 HCS Alum), and Effie (Class of 2028). He has spent his life making music, from church choir, ensembles, and quartets to elementary, middle school, and high school choir and band. He majored in Educational Ministries and Music at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, spending four years under Conductor Jerry Edmonds in the Moody Chorale. He also completed his music internship under Dr. Edmonds in the worship and music department of Moody Church. He went on to lead church music programs in California and Texas, while also staying active musically after moving into preaching roles.
His desire is to see the HCS Choir grow in their technical musicality, using each weekly rehearsal to work hard together so they enter performances prepared and leave them proud.
