HCS Men's Golf Tournament

Congratulations to Darren Jones, Jake Womack, and Leo Acosta for winning the “HCS Men’s Golf Tournament” held March 25, 2023 at Admiral Baker Golf Course in San Diego.

Sponsored by the HCS Board, the golf tournament was a time of fellowship for HCS dads and a fundraiser for the HCS Tuition Relief Fund.

The Board will be planning some more casual men’s events in the future, including some "golf for fun” and prayer breakfasts.

For information about the qualifications and duties of Board members, please go to the member's password-protected area of the website, enter the passcode, and locate the Bylaws (under Documents).

The nomination period opens January 29th - February 28th.

Board Member Nomination Process

The Board Nomination process can be summarized as follows: Members submit Board Nominations during a nomination period. Those nominations are then turned over to a Nomination Committee comprised of a former Board member, the Principal, and current or past members of our volunteer leadership team. Together, this committee meets with qualified nominees and then passes along their recommendations to the full Board. The Board will then proceed to interview potential candidates based on the committee’s recommendations.

The nomination process runs from January 29th through February 28th with the goal of completing the Nomination Committee meetings by March 11th and the Board interviews by the end of March.

Please send your nominations to HCSboard@hcssd.org and principal@hcssd.org. You do not need to confirm the interest of the nominee to submit their name (though you are certainly welcome to do so). The committee will reach out and let the nominee know they have been nominated and determine whether or not they want to proceed.

Your role as members is absolutely vital in this process. We are looking to you to bring forth men who you believe share our passion and vision for Heritage Christian School. We hope that you will take some time to think through at least one or two nominations. Self-nominations are also welcomed.

MARC CRAWFORD

Chairman
Marc Crawford and his wife, Amy, will celebrate their 24nd wedding anniversary this year. They are blessed with two children, Olivia and Darin. Their family has been homeschooling with Heritage Christian School since 2012, when their oldest, Olivia (Class of 2024) started first grade. They have attended Bonita Class Day since 2012, where they have thrived in the loving and harmonious environment amongst the Bonita families. Through this group they have made some amazing friendships and worked with wonderful mentors and encouragers throughout their homeschool journey. They have also been involved with HCS Drama Club, HCS Concert and Jazz Bands, HCS OneAchord Choir, and, most recently, the HCS Honor Society and HCS Basketball Clubs.

Professionally, Marc has served as a Naval Officer for 27 years and currently a Commodore for a squadron of ships at Naval Base San Diego. He has an MBA from the University of Hawaii and a Master’s of Science in Strategy, This is his second term on the Board, and Marc welcomes the opportunity to give back to the school that has given so much to his family.

Between Amy and Marc, she first felt the call to homeschool after Olivia finished kindergarten. Admittedly, Marc was skeptical at first. However, after he attended an HCS homeschooling seminar, he too, felt called to homeschool. There was just something special about HCS and he knew that these were the kind of Christ-centered families they wanted to be around as they educate their children with a Christian perspective. They feel extremely blessed to live in a country where homeschooling is allowed.

Board Vice Chairman

KENT GOBLE

Vice-Chairman
Kent Goble and wife, Charmin, have been married for 21 years. She is his rock and his life's true love from the first moment that they met. The Lord has blessed them with three children - Nehemiah, Magdelyn and Abigail.

They completely committed to homeschooling their children beginning in 2008, starting their journey at Heritage Christian School which continues to this present day. It is hard to count the many blessings that Heritage and homeschooling have brought to their lives. They are so grateful to God that the Homeschool community has been preserved and has allowed them to raise their children in the admonition of the Lord. The importance of God being the cornerstone of their day to day schooling has cemented HIS presence in science, math, history, language, and most importantly, LIFE, for their family - this truly has been priceless.

LEO ACOSTA

Member
Leo Acosta was born and raised in Los Angeles and he met the love of his life, Laura, at a church camp there in 1998. They have been happily married for 19 years now and are blessed with 5 beautiful children - Sophia, Dalia, Mia, Lincoln, and Julia. They will be beginning their eleventh year homeschooling this year and have enjoyed being part of Heritage since 2013.

Although they didn’t imagine themselves homeschooling their children at the beginning, they chose to do it at first just because they didn’t like the schools in their neighborhood at the time. However, over time and once they began to see the amazing benefits for their children, their relationships, and their family as a whole, they soon realized that it was the will of God for their lives to educate their children at home. They are extremely grateful to God for this freedom.

Professionally, Leo is a middle school counselor and has enjoyed guiding students academically and supporting them socially and emotionally for the past 15 years.

eric maggio

Secretary
Eric Maggio is a San Diego native, who grew up in Rancho Bernardo and went to Baylor University for Undergrad and Grad School. There he earned a masters of divinity degree from Truett Seminary and has been in the ministry for 20 years. After Baylor he met and married his wonderful wife Michelle, a K-8 school teacher, 14 years ago. They are blessed to have an 11 year old son named Tyler. Michelle and Eric have had the pleasure of homeschooling their son Tyler through Heritage for 4 years now.

Eric has a great love for homeschooling and a commitment to Heritage Christian School. For the last several years he has served as the Karate instructor and more recently as the guitar teacher for the EC and Del Cerro class days as well as preaching and leading worship at their morning chapel services. He has a 6th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate and has been teaching Martial Arts and Self Defense with a focus on Christian Discipleship in churches and schools since 1996.

Professionally, he is a Pastor and has had the privilege of serving on the staff of several churches in Texas, Virginia, and California. He has planted four churches, three through the North American Mission Board including most notably “Church at the Beach IB” currently celebrating 11 years as a church. In over 20 years of ministry he has served as a senior pastor, a youth pastor, a children’s pastor, a worship leader, and a church planter in large mega churches and smaller congregations in both rural and urban settings. But his most important ministry is homeschooling his son. Eric loves how his ministry schedule works well in allowing him time to be actively involved in homeschooling Tyler. He is excited to serve as part of the board of directors at Heritage to help see Christian homeschool education thrive in San Diego.

Jake and Allissa Womack have been married for 9 wonderful years and have seen God direct and orchestrate their lives for His glory. They are truly each other's best friends and love to share each moment and stage of life with each other. They have been blessed with 3 amazing children: Colton, Ellie, and Andrew.

Together, Jake and Allissa have committed themselves to homeschooling their children. Both being products of public school, Allissa in Davison, MI and Jake in San Diego, CA, they recognize and understand the importance of parents taking on the responsibility of teaching their children. Allissa was a kindergarten teacher, but has since answered the Lord’s call for her to teach her own children and to ensure that they receive a Christ-centered education. They are starting their second year with Heritage Christian Schools.

Jake has been a credentialed English teacher for San Diego Unified for 14 years and has seen first hand the positives and negatives of public school. Jake is currently the Dean of Students at an A-Typical school within SDUSD, and he sees the role of the family being active in a student's education more important than ever before.

As a family, the Womack’s enjoy camping, swimming, traveling, Little League, golf, bike riding, and many other outdoor activities. They drive to Michigan every summer to spend quality time with Allissa’s family and they enjoy stopping throughout the country to explore exciting places. They are blessed to call San Diego their home and have gained lifelong friendships through their church and through Heritage Christian.

Mike Sedgwick and his wife Sarah have been married for 21 years. They have two sons, Calvin and Duncan, and have homeschooled through HCS for ten years, since their oldest was in Kindergarten. Some of our closest family friends have come through our involvement in Heritage. Calvin and Duncan have been involved in various class days, and just this year started HCS Academy and Bonita Class Day. They have also been involved in basketball, band, sixth grade events, and field trips.

Mike is the Senior Pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Escondido. He has a communications degree from Whitworth University and a Masters of Divinity from Fuller Seminary.

Mike and Sarah feel blessed by God to be able to homeschool and are so grateful for the Heritage services and community that has helped make home education not only possible for them, but a joy. They love being able to guide and build their sons up in faith, character, and academics at home and in the community of other Christ-centered homeschool families.
