Why I decided to Homeschool

Written by Kim Valentine

When we first started I didn’t know all the blessings that homeschooling would afford us. Words cannot express how immensely grateful I am that God led us to home education.

Way back in 1990, when it was time to make a decision about what school to send our then five year old daughter April to, we felt like we just could not send her to the nearby public school. We believe a judeo-Christian worldview best fits Reality. Yet, we live in a Post-modern society which is becoming more and more anti-Christian, and secular textbooks reflect the dominant zeitgeist. Also, a teacher’s personal beliefs, though not overtly stated, can be transmitted unintentionally during the course of a year. This is a natural thing, and I don’t blame teachers for this at all.

If we had the money, we would probably have chosen to send her to a Christian school. But we did not. My thought at the time was to do kindergarten at home and then re-evaluate. After that first year I knew that this was the best choice for us. All three of our children were subsequently taught at home through high school graduation.

Some people think we were sheltering our children, indoctrinating them in our “narrow” point of view. Why wouldn’t we? Consider that no matter where they go to school, they are indoctrinated in someone’s point of view. Shouldn’t it be the parents’? Additionally, we live within a culture with values we don’t share. These values are disseminated by media, other children and adults, even church peers who pass on what they learn at school. In today’s world non-Christian influences are ubiquitous. One could say a child homeschooled with a Christian perspective has exposure to more diversity of opinion than those who do go to public school.
